Why Outdoor Ceremonies Feel Different (And Why I Love Them)

There’s something about celebrating life’s biggest moments outdoors that just hits differently. Maybe it’s the way sunlight filters through leaves during wedding vows, or how birdsong becomes the soundtrack to promises being made. Maybe it’s the honesty of being in nature – nothing artificial, nothing stuffy, just real moments in beautiful spaces.

I’ve been thinking about this lately because I’ve attended three outdoor ceremonies in three very different settings, and each one reminded me exactly why I love what I do.

The Woodland Wedding – The last ceremony I attended, was where we all stood in a clearing surrounded by oak trees while the couple in their 60s renewed their vows. They’d been married 35 years in a registry office back then – quick, practical, didn’t make a fuss. But their children surprised them with this vow renewal for their anniversary, and honestly, watching them say their vows with three decades of life experience behind them, surrounded by family and ancient trees, was one of the most moving ceremonies I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing.

The bride (she insisted on being called that, age be damned) wore a flowing purple dress. The groom cried. Their adult children stood as witnesses. And halfway through, a robin landed on a branch so close we could all see it clearly, and everyone took it as a sign that the groom’s late mother was there too.
You can’t plan moments like that. They just happen when you’re brave enough to celebrate outside…

Funerals & Celebrations of Life

A ceremony that reflects a life, a ceremony serves as a time to pause, come together, and celebrate a life well-lived. It is an opportunity for reflection, remembrance, and connection—where stories are shared, love is expressed, and a person's legacy is lovingly embraced by those who knew them, natural woodland burials, eco-friendly ceremonies with biodegradable materials, non-traditional celebrations of life, and ceremonies in meaningful locations.
