Because the legal part (signing at the register office) takes 10 minutes. The meaningful part – your vows, your families, your celebration, your story told beautifully – that's what a celebrant ceremony gives you. Complete freedom to create exactly what you want, wherever you want it, with whoever you want involved.

How long is a typical wedding ceremony?

Usually 25-35 minutes, though it's flexible depending on what you include. Some couples want shorter, some want longer with more readings or participatory elements. We'll find the right length for you.

Can we write our own vows?

Absolutely, and I highly encourage it, as there is nothing better than to say your vows, written from the heart . I can guide you in writing them if you want support, or you can repeat vows I write for you. Whatever feels most comfortable.

Can we include readings from guests?

Accepted Answer

Yes, of course you can. I am happy to support you where needed in reading options and if you want to choose who does the readings, we can add it into the ceremony script , so it flows naturally.

What symbolic rituals do you offer?

Ring-warming, sand-blending (especially lovely for blended families), unity candles, handfasting, tree planting, tequila shots (yes, really – I've done it!), oathing stones, and we can create custom rituals meaningful to you.

The weather can be unpredictable, so when having an outdoor ceremony, it is always advisable to discuss a backup plan. Some venues will have covered spaces to cater for the weather change, some couples may hire marquees, some embrace the weather. Rain at weddings is actually considered lucky in many cultures, and often makes ceremonies more memorable and magical.

Yes, it's included in my enhanced package (or can be added separately). Rehearsals help nervous couples feel confident and ensure everything flows smoothly on the day.

How quickly can you arrange a funeral ceremony?

Accepted Answer

Funerals typically occur 2-3 weeks after someone dies, giving us time to create something meaningful together. So usually within 2-3 days of you contacting me, I can arrange a meeting with you to discuss details and get to know all about your loved one and hear the wonderful story of their life but I can be flexible if you need to meet sooner.

What's the difference between a funeral and a celebration of life?

The terms are often used interchangeably, though "celebration of life" usually suggests a more joyful, less formal tone, often held weeks or months after death in a meaningful location rather than a crematorium. This also means that there are less restrictions on timeframes required (as there are with crematoriums) so you can then make your loved ones send off as you want.

Can we have a non-traditional funeral?

Absolutely. Colourful dress codes, unconventional music, outdoor locations, laughter alongside tears, celebration of hobbies and passions – all of this is not only possible but welcomed.

What is a natural burial?

An eco-friendly burial in woodland or meadow using biodegradable materials (wicker, cardboard, wool or bamboo coffins). The site returns to nature, often with wildflowers or trees growing. Many people find these settings more comforting than traditional cemeteries.

Can we scatter ashes anywhere?

Accepted Answer

You need permission from landowners and there are some restrictions (like not in public parks without permission), but yes, ashes can be scattered in most meaningful locations but you need to get permission first to comply with their regulations. I can help you plan a beautiful ceremony for scattering or burying ashes.

Do we have to have the ceremony at a crematorium?

Not necessarily. The ceremony can of course be done at your chosen crematorium or If you choose direct cremation (simple cremation without ceremony), you can then plan a celebration of life afterwards and can be anywhere meaningful – gardens, favourite walking spots, beaches, village halls, anywhere.

Yes, please! If humour reflected who the person was – their terrible jokes, their funny habits, things that made everyone laugh – including that honours them honestly and often provides important lightness for grieving families.

Costs vary by site but are often comparable to traditional burial (£1000-£3000). I can provide information about the beautiful natural burial grounds in our area like Tithe Green in Oxton and you can also look on their website for further details of their services.

A celebrant is an independent ceremony creator who crafts bespoke scripts and delivers personalised ceremonies for life's important moments. Unlike registrars (who perform legal marriages following set formats) or religious ministers, celebrants offer complete freedom – we can celebrate anywhere, include whatever elements matter to you, and create ceremonies that genuinely reflect who you are.

Are celebrant ceremonies legally binding?

In England, celebrant wedding ceremonies aren't legally binding, but that's actually a gift. You'll do a quick legal signing at the register office (10 minutes, very simple, two witnesses), then have your real ceremony with me where you can say, do and include absolutely anything you want. Many couples actually prefer it this way. In Scotland and other countries, celebrants can perform legal marriages.

Not at all. While celebrant ceremonies are traditionally non-religious, I'm happy to discuss the inclusion of a prayer, readings or traditions that's meaningful to you. I can blend the religious and non-religious elements beautifully into your ceremony.

Can we have our ceremony anywhere?

Yes! That's one of the best things about celebrant ceremonies. Beaches, woodlands, gardens, favourite pubs, hillsides, barns, marquees, family homes, glamping sites – anywhere that feels right for you.

How far in advance should we book?

Accepted Answer

Again, there will vary depending on the ceremony, location etc. For weddings, as a guide, some book 6-12 months ahead, some 12-18 months ahead. If you want a popular summer weekend date, then you will need to plan and book this further ahead so you can get the ceremony date you dreamed of. For funerals, this is approximately 2-3 weeks. For naming ceremonies and vow renewals, 3-6 months is usually plenty of time but that said, I can work to shorter timeframes if needed.

What's your booking process?

Initial email or call → consultation (face-to-face or Zoom) → I send summary and questionnaire → I write your ceremony → you review and we refine → finalise details → ceremony day. Throughout this I'm available via unlimited emails, calls and meetings.

Do you require a booking fee?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a 50% booking fee secures me for your date and to book me for your ceremony, with the remaining fee due 12 weeks before the ceremony date or on production of the final script, whichever is sooner. If couples book within 3 months of their ceremony date for example, then the full amount is payable on booking. Bookings 2 years from your ceremony date for example, then a payment plan can be discussed on an individual basis (for weddings/naming). (for funerals) payment can be done directly through your funeral director, or with you directly, whichever method works best for you.

Contact me as soon as possible. If I'm available for your new date, we'll transfer everything. If there are circumstances beyond your control, we'll work something out.

For weddings and celebrations, I always dress smartly and colourfully in a way that fits the tone of your ceremony – usually a dress, smart outfit or suit, that's professional but not overly formal. For funerals, respectful attire appropriate to the family's wishes.

Do you use a microphone?

If needed for large gatherings or outdoor venues with wind, a microphone would be used. My natural voice projection is good, but outside it can get distorted with outside noise. I would advise to discuss this with your wedding venue / planner and ask them to provide this and set it up on their system.

I maintain excellent connections with other celebrants and would arrange a qualified replacement if an emergency made it impossible for me to be there. This has never happened, but it's important to have contingency plans.

Plus I just really love what I do, and that shows in every ceremony I create.

Christenings are religious (Church of England) and include baptism. Naming ceremonies are non-religious celebrations that can include whatever beliefs, values and elements matter to you. There's no religious commitment or promises made to God – it's about community promises and celebration.

Celebrant ceremonies involve: personal consultations (usually 2-3 hours), extensive questionnaire work, bespoke ceremony writing (5-10 hours), unlimited revisions, coordination with venues/suppliers, rehearsal preparation, and ceremony delivery. Plus we travel to your chosen location and bring all ceremony materials and equipment. You're investing in a completely personalised, meaningful ceremony that reflects exactly who you are.
